Don't feel so bad, I remember when Borland had the best compiler by far. It wasnt all that long ago, and yes, borland is suing Microsoft for enticing away their top compiler people. We all know it is true, too.
I use VC++ because I was able to buy a personal copy very cheap. It's also what I use at work, so it's very comfortable to me. Comfortable tools, unfortuately, sometimes beat out the best tools. Microsoft certainly knows that.
